BOOK BLITZ: The Book of Ivy by Amy Engel

The Book of Ivy (The Book of Ivy #1)
by Amy Engel
Release Date: 11/04/14
Entangled Teen

Summary from Goodreads:
After a brutal nuclear war, the United States was left decimated. A small group of survivors eventually banded together, but only after more conflict over which family would govern the new nation. The Westfalls lost. Fifty years later, peace and control are maintained by marrying the daughters of the losing side to the sons of the winning group in a yearly ritual.

This year, it is my turn.

My name is Ivy Westfall, and my mission is simple: to kill the president’s son—my soon-to-be husband—and restore the Westfall family to power.

But Bishop Lattimer is either a very skilled actor or he’s not the cruel, heartless boy my family warned me to expect. He might even be the one person in this world who truly understands me. But there is no escape from my fate. I am the only one who can restore the Westfall legacy.

Because Bishop must die. And I must be the one to kill him…

Here an an exclusive excerpt from the novel! (P.S. I am so excited for this book I am hoping to pick it up sometime this weekend!)

[Bishop] lets out a frustrated sigh. “You don’t…you don’t have to be any certain way with me, Ivy. I don’t expect anything. I want you to be yourself.” He leans back and scrubs at his face with one hand. He sounds tired. “I just want to know who you are.”“Okay,” I say, while my brain searches for all the hidden meanings behind his words, trying to figure out what it is he really wants. Because it seems impossible that he is coming into this relationship without an agenda of his own. “What do you want to know?”
Bishop leans forward again and stares at me. “Everything,” he says quietly, and my stomach clenches. “Anything.”I know I have to tell him something, but I need to be careful. And even beyond the worries about all the secrets I hold, there is the nagging feeling that I’m not even sure who I am, apart from my family. For most of my life, I was the spare daughter, the one who would stay by my father’s side and work behind the scenes while Callie took center stage. And then, unexpectedly, two years ago, I became the focus. I’ve spent my whole life becoming the girl they need me to be, and I’ve shoved any parts that don’t fit so far down inside myself I don't think I can find them anymore. It is one more violation to have to reach down and offer myself up to this stranger.I force my fingers to stop worrying the cushion thread. “Umm…I don’t know.” I take a deep breath. “I like strawberries. I wish I were a few inches shorter. I’m scared of snakes. I like to read. My mother died when I was a baby.” I say the words fast, as if the sheer speed at which I spit them out will render them less personal, although they are hardly deep, dark secrets. I wonder if he knows what his father did to my family? How he took away my mother—had her killed—to remind us who has the power. Just thinking about it makes heat rush into my cheeks, my heart thundering against my ribs. I should stop, but instead, I look up at him, hold his eyes. “I don’t like the things your father does.” Callie may be the fiercer one, but there is a recklessness in me that cannot be contained. “Is that what you wanted to know?”
The expression on Bishop’s face doesn’t change, his eyes still and calm. “It’s a start,” he says eventually.

BOOK BLITZ: Love and other Unknown Variables by Shannon Alexander

Love and Other Unknown Variables
Release Date: 10/07/ 14
Entangled Teen</ o:p>

Summary from Goodreads:
Charlie Hanson has a clear vision of his future. A senior at Brighton School of Mathematics and Science, he knows he’ll graduate, go to MIT, and inevitably discover solutions to the universe’s greatest unanswered questions. He’s that smart. But Charlie’s future blurs the moment he reaches out to touch the tattoo on a beautiful girl’s neck.

The future has never seemed very kind to Charlotte Finch, so she’s counting on the present. She’s not impressed by the strange boy at the donut shop—until she learns he’s a student at Brighton where her sister has just taken a job as the English teacher. With her encouragement, Charlie orchestrates the most effective prank campaign in Brighton history. But, in doing so, he puts his own future in jeopardy. </ i>

</ i>By the time he learns she's ill—and that the pranks were a way to distract Ms. Finch from Charlotte’s illness— Charlotte’s gravitational pull is too great to overcome. Soon he must choose between the familiar formulas he’s always relied on or the girl he’s falling for (at far more than 32 feet per second squared).

Special Excerpt!

In Love and Other Unknown Variables, logical Charlie Hanson often loses his laser-like
focus on school and his future when he’s around Charlotte Finch. Case in point: the chick-
flick movie festival she convinces him to watch. Charlotte’s smile is a powerful force—one
from which Charlie is helpless to resist.
Midway through the second movie, Becca pauses it to use the restroom, leaving
Charlotte and me sitting in the dim light of the frozen television screen. My sister sure is a sucky
chaperone. Doesn’t she realize how dangerous it is to leave me unsupervised around beautiful
girls with infinity tattoos?
Charlotte nudges my shoulder with her own. “This is fun. Admit it.”
“This is a total chick-fest,” I say motioning toward the TV. “I don’t get what you guys
see in these movies. That last one had a terrible ending, and I can already see this one’s going
down the same path.”
“I admit that Romeo and Juliet are not my favorite couple. Being in love for three days is
an easy gig.”
“Exactly. They’d probably realize that they hate each other if they spent more time
together.”
“Or worse,” Charlotte says, hugging a pillow, “they’d grow indifferent and their love
would waste away. Nothing lasts forever.”
“That’s bleak. Maybe you shouldn’t hang out with me so much. I think I’m rubbing off
on you.”
Charlotte smacks me with the pillow she was holding. “Shut up, Hanson.”
“Now you sound like your sister.” I chuckle and toss the pillow back at her. She retaliates
by crashing two pillows around my head like cymbals.
“Game on,” I shout, grabbing as many pillows as I can and lobbing them at her one after
the other.
“Uncle! Uncle,” she squeals, lying buried on the couch.
Laughing, I clear away the pillows. Her dark curls are sticking up at odd angles, and
I reach out to smooth them back into place. Charlotte catches my hand in hers, and I cup her
cheek.
It feels as though someone has turned an electromagnet on inside of me. There is a force
out of my control pulling me in. Charlotte’s eyes flick to my lips, and I’m undone. I may have
been able to resist before, but now I give in to the pulling and press my lips to hers. They are
soft, softer than I imagined—better. Her hands are suddenly at my waist, one finger dipping
under the edge of my shirt. One finger and I groan like someone is lifting a one hundred pound
weight off my chest.
My tongue laps at her bottom lip, the one she bites on so much, and she parts her lips
just enough for me to taste it myself. A string tightens from my chest to my groin—so taut I can
barely breathe. She tastes like sugar, so soft and warm in my mouth, I ache.
Her hands slide up my sides and to my chest, where she gently pushes me back as she
pulls away. “Wait. We can’t do this.”
Without her lips on mine, my body loosens and I catch my breath. “Sorry. Charlotte, I’m
so—”
“Don’t. But we can’t. I can’t lose—”
“What are you guys doing?” Becca calls, walking in through the kitchen. “I heard
screaming from the bathroom.”
Charlotte’s cheeks darken in the dim light from the TV. A worry flickers across her face.
Becca. She can’t lose Becca.
Now you’ve done it, Chuck, the Greta in my head snarls. I’ve got to fix this.
“Help, Bec,” I shout, jumping away from Charlotte. “Charlotte attacked me. I was just
sitting here saying how much I loved this wonderful, romantic film, and WHAM. Pillow to my
head.”
Charlotte runs a hand through her curls and bites that lip of hers, making me want to
groan all over. My expression must be a sight, because she takes one look at me and laughs
before smacking me with a pillow.
“See? You gotta save me, sis.”
Becca chuckles. “You guys are lame.” She takes her seat on one side of Charlotte, who
smacks Becca in the face with another pillow before linking their arms.
Becca turns the movie back on. And I wonder what might have happened if she’d stayed
away just a little longer. The thought of kissing Charlotte again makes me feel like I’m being
sucked away into the vacuum of space. Which, if you’re wondering, is painful and scary and
leaves me almost breathless.
Through the darkness, Charlotte’s hand works its way into the crook of my arm, too. I
don’t move for the rest of the movie, afraid that if she lets go, I’ll float away again.

We're back!!!

So, Blogjob was fun and all, but they began putting in rules for people that were trying to beat the system. Not that they were wrong in doing so, it had to be done. A book review blog in my opinion though did not fit within the rules that were set forth. Like no posts not written by you which meant no tours where text was specific.  So here we are again! I hope you all like our Halloween themed header!

Stay tuned for more coming soon!

“Have you made any progress?” Serena asks.
After giving my necklace a tug, I randomly pick one of the three choices of a future owner I’ve narrowed it down to. At this point, there’s nothing different about any of them. All are rich warlocks offering much for possession of me but say little else. Any warlock who said anything more always said something distasteful. “Contact this one. And make sure he pays for me before you sign anything.”
“You’re making the decision so soon?”
There’s no holding back my emotions any longer. This isn’t something I want any more than she does, but there’s a part to play. I focus all my negativity into cheer. It comes out in a squeak of giddiness. “Naturally I did, Serena. I can’t wait until I’m with my new owner. Excuse me while I go embroider a handkerchief with his name on it.”
The stunned look on her face makes an apology want to tumble from my lips, but there’s no saying the words. I spring from the room like I’m the happiest woman in Chardonia, not the one returning to a world full of hexes and beatings and warlocks. A world I despise.

Review: Creator by Tiffany Truitt

In the beginning of the Creators, Tess has just witnessed a miracle of sorts. Standing before her is her father.  After the shock wears off she and her dad go to meet up with their groups of friends, or in her father’s case soldiers.   She finds out the girl who attacked her at the end of the previous novel was sent by her father to prevent her from meeting George.  Not much time is given to catching up on old times and after some heated discussions among the group, they make their way back to their old isolationist camp.
Tess has two big things on her mind throughout this book. One being James her boyfriend, having seen him give himself up to George to protect her, she worries for his safety. Her second worry is for her sister Louisa who is still pregnant.  The pregnancy is hard on her small frame and even how she became that way still weighs on her mentally.

The girl’s father seems to have a big master plan to destroy the chosen ones of the western settlement.  Even going as far as making sure guards keep watch over a special “package” that he says is very important to their mission.  Tess having not seen her father in many years is weary of him and his army.  Why did he abandon her and the rest of the family all those years ago? Does he have an agenda?

I am a big fan of dystopian YA novels as many of you know so of course I enjoyed this book! It was the third and final book in a series, but trust me not having read the first two there was enough information to catch me up. The story is engrossing and heartfelt Tess considers the people she surrounded herself with her family even more so in some cases then her actual one.

REVIEW: The Haven by Carol Lynch Williams

In The Haven by Carol Lynch Williams, we are introduced to a resident of The Haven in the Year 2020.  The Haven is the only place she and her fellow residents have ever known.  They are told that the outside world is dangerous; plagued with a disease that has killed millions.  They are also told within each of them could be the cure.

Shiloh is a rarity among residents of The Haven; she can remember things.  This is rare because each night the residents are given a tonic which supposedly is like liquid vitamins, but also helps them forget the previous day when they wake up each morning.  Shiloh remembers though and fears every day that another person she knows will be taken. When doctors find evidence of the plague in a resident’s body they remove it. Sometimes taking a limb, sometimes an organ and sometimes it’s fatal.  Shiloh remembers everyone that has been taken.

Her friend Gideon is a rarity too.  He believes there is a cure and that the staff and faculty of the facility are keeping it from them.  He is treading on dangerous ground though as descent is not tolerated and can result in higher doses of the tonic or worse…

As a fan of dystopian YA I knew pretty much immediately I was going to enjoy this book.  Shiloh is a very likeable main character which I could relate to.  My having a disability sometimes means that I don’t have control over situations as much as I would like. So, when Shiloh had similar feelings I felt for her.

Review: Deviation

Ven is an imitation and in the sequel of the novel by the same name, she continues on her mission to save those like her.  To do that she knows she must kill Titus Rogen, but could there be someone pulling his strings too? Someone who is even more powerful?

In the beginning of this novel we find Ven aka Raven Rogen’s Imitation forced to interrogate the leaders of a rebel faction.  In the last novel she helped them move her friends, also imitations to a new space to hide.  The interrogation does not go well, with one killing themselves and the other not saying a word.  The good news is for the moment her fellow imitations are safe being kept in the abandoned basement of her friend Obidiah fathers business.  She tries to visit them as much as possible, but sadly due to Titus’s tight grip it’s not nearly as often as she would like.

Things with Linc are better than ever.  They still have to sneak around for any alone time, but their love is strong.  Titus though is aware of their relationship and makes sure that Ven knows that if she disobeys that Linc or any of the other people she cares about will be hurt.

I enjoyed the action in this book, though the abuse can get downright uncomfortable at times I admire Ven for continuing to stay strong throughout. Titus’s evil knows no bounds and it’s sickening the levels to which he sinks to keep order.  You also see underneath though a bit of fear when he speaks to one person.  I truly believe the truest evil might be that person. This book is worth the price and I read it quickly over two days.

I raised my hand to excuse myself to the bathroom and Miss Hailey obliged. I sped walked to the girl’s room as Kayla skipped behind me. I pushed open a stall and threw my hands up in the air. “What the heck Kayla? Here, at school?”
     She laughed.
“Seriously? I know something’s up, but why not wait until after school?”
She leaned against the stall and sighed. “I told you things are weird with me lately. I don’t know what’s happening but I can feel a change coming. I… I…” Her mad rush to speak was suddenly interrupted by a choking sound coming from her mouth.
“Kayla!” I rushed to her and my hands went through her body. She wasn’t solid like normal. Something was wrong! Kayla had always felt like flesh and blood to me. Never like a ghost.
Suddenly her mouth opened and water poured out onto my feet, splashing my shoes and legs. I still tried but failed to help her. She was choking on water and, if I wasn’t mistaken, she was drowning. I was helpless and didn’t know what to do. Then before I could come up with an answer she uttered one word, “Diary.”
